Sneak peek
Rick's anger was rising and he had a sudden urge to do something destructive. He felt his mobile buzzing again in his pocket. Maybe it was someone who could calm him down, make him feel better.
It was Dylan. 'How's it going, Rick?' He didn't sound very cheerful.
'To be perfectly honest with you, it hasn't been my best day. And, as you know, I've had some stinkers in this job.' Rick thought he was managing his anger surprisingly well.
'Will you calm down? Hey, I can see you.' Dylan hung up, leaving Rick to spin around in an attempt to spot him. At first he just saw another gang of dangerous-looking youngsters leaning over the railings on a flight of stairs to the flats, but when he turned back around, Dylan had materialised.
'What's going on?' he barked at Rick.
'It's going to shit, is what's going on.'
'You're seriously losing your attitude. You have to get it back,' Dylan said patronisingly.
'That's not going to happen! I don't know if you've noticed, but my positive attitude fucked off some time last year and isn't planning a comeback,' Rick yelled.
The gang of lads on the stairs heard him and started laughing raucously. Two of them got up and lumbered over to where the confrontation was taking place.
'Where do you get off talking to me like that? I'm your team leader! I'm trying to help you and you talk to me like I'm a twat,' Dylan sounded as pissed off as Rick did.
'I'm not really in the mood to talk to you right now, Dylan.' Rick turned to leave. The camel's back had been well and truly broken; for him the war was over.
'Where do you think you're going? You don't walk away from me!' Dylan was about to follow but the two yobs approached him, the bigger of them standing between Dylan and the retreating Rick.
'Have you got a fag?' the smaller one spat.
'I don't smoke,' Dylan replied, his gaze travelling over the big lad's shoulder to Rick, who was speed-walking away.
'I ken you've got some, everyone does.' His claw-like hand went into the pocket of his tracksuit top.
That was too much for Dylan, who turned around and sprinted away from the two boys. They both laughed as he fled between two large blocks of flats and out of view.
